Earlier this week, I stood mesmerized by the water striders in a pool of still water at the edge of our little local wetland. Time stopped as I watched them go about their business in the six square feet of liquid neighborhood they call home. Oh, to be so small that my feet only dent the surface of water!
Michelle has this week’s Poetry Friday roundup at her blog, Michelle Kogan.
I loved your poem, but I loved the line, Oh to be so small that my feet only dent the water, from the paragraph after the poem even more. https://dave-homeschooldad.blogspot.com/2022/06/i-cant-skip.html

Your poem captures the movement of water striders so perfectly! I love the refrain – it’s so effective between the longer lines.

Applauding! I try to find them at my lake but haven’t yet! You’ve made me look and look again, Mary Lee.

Great poem and photo! You captured their movements so well in the short repeated lines “sit, dart, flick.” Applause for you both!

She IS magic. Love it, Mary Lee. This is such a good reminder to visit the neighborhood pond and applaud everyone there.

Your poem could be interpreted as a shape poem, as it delightfully captures the shape and movement of the water strider as it glides across the water surface. Clever construction, Mary Lee. Interesting subject. Your topic choice has me thinking about Valerie Worth’s poetry.

I’m honored by the comparison!

What an amazing skinny–with the rhyme and how it fits the essence of a water strider. Wonderful.

Well done, Mary Lee! I don’t know if I’d have the patience to “sit/dart/flick” all day. Hooray for the water strider!

Yes, through these creatures we can feel what water tension means as they “bend” the water.

I love how you embedded four lines inside a refrain (or vice versa?). I can sit for long periods and be mesmerized by water striders skating and sliding and darting over a surface. Thank you!

Their “neighborhood” is drying up and we don’t have any rain forecast…I wonder where they’ll go?

Is your poem a specific form? It resembles a skinny and rhymes like a zeno. The repetition is effective.

No specific form…just seemed to be what the poem needed!

We are lucky your “mesmerizing” moment inspired a well balanced poem (subject and structure). 🙂
