Poetry Friday: Don’t Obey

Today’s poetry challenge came from Susan Thomsen at Chicken Spaghetti. The inspiration and mentor text was Donika Kelly’s  “Poem to Remind Myself of the Natural Order of Things” . Susan’s response to her own challenge is here. This was so much fun! I can’t wait to see what others came up with!

Carol has this week’s Poetry Friday roundup is at The Apples in My Orchard.

  1. Wow. This meme showcased by your poem is powerful! I love the unexpected words that also make sense…”bellweather choir/Resist torpor/extravagance of a wild ride.” I only have a chef’s kiss for how you met this challenge. Well done!

  2. Resist torpor – yes! And YES to all the rest. Thank you, Mary Lee, for this poetic and scientific and heart-led kickstart to the day. Go, frogs! — Robyn HB

  3. A ‘bellwether choir’!! I love that so much – that is the best description of a protest yet.
The words you use shift like the imagery – and I love that the artist included the little girl in white who looks so much like Ruby Bridges. All of those faces remind us: We’ve been here before. We’ve cycled through hate and screaming and injustice and lawless injury and staggered out the other side. We can do so again… And again. And again.

We can’t metamorphose, but we CAN change. If we so choose…

  4. Mary Lee, what a poem and great advice from our green friend. Thanks for sharing the artwork too. I love the idea of joining a “bellwether choir” and the hope found in “the possibility of plagues.” Delightful poem and take on Susan’s prompt.

  5. Wow, Mary Lee! This is just fabulous, fun and even optimistic. Chef’s kiss to that final stanza and all its allusions. Perfection! PS I do hope it’s a bellwether chorus!
