When I was teaching a summer writing camp, one of our opening writing activities was a favorite things poem. I found myself singing through yours. I’m so happy you enjoyed San Diego. It’s on my list of places to travel. I once had cousins who lived in La Jolla. Sadly, we’ve lost touch. Thanks for sharing your delightful, fun poem.
Always a good exercise, especially an antidote to all the madness of the world! No matter how tough things feel, there are still so many lovely things around us to celebrate.
Also – my mini geologist would absolutely agree with you, picking up stones is one of his favourite things. 😉
Your poem is rich in imagery -sights and sounds that inject an essential energy. I love the allusion that shines through in the final stanza too, Mary Lee. It made me reread the poem within renewed appreciation for what you as the poet had done here. Bravo!
Thanks for infusing my Saturday morning with such joy, Mary Lee! I am delighted that your trip was filled with all of these wonderful moments and that you encapsulated them in this delightful form. (I’m a huge Sound of Music fan!) I’m now wondering how I might do something similar–thanks for the mentor poem and the inspiration!
A visit to the niblings through your poem is a delightful way to open my morning, Mary Lee. May the rest of your weekend be filled with rest and remembrance of a fabulous trip to one of the most beautiful places.
What a great find! Feels like that sand dollar’s heart found a home in yours! I love that empty-full feeling, too. Grandnibs seem to give that as gift.
Marvelous Mary Lee! I sung your poem! The verses are heart-soaring. And speaking of heart…. are you showing us a perfect heart cut naturally into a perfect San Diego sand dollar? What are the chances of that EVER replicating, ever recurring? YOU found some kinda summer mojo.
[I have a small file of unexpected hearts found in the wild… sidewalks, nature, buildings so I have an eye for such magics…]
What a fun and sensitive poem, I may like to try it. 💙 some of its playfulness, and the sand dollar fits charmingly too, thanks!
