Slice of Life: Surprises

Thank you to Two Writing Teachers for creating an amazing community of writers and a safe, welcoming space to write and share.

I surprised myself yesterday. There was no way I could write to the prompt of “slumber party games” by going through memory’s front door. The “slumber party memories” door is kept shut with a chair lodged under the knob.

So I had to find another way in. I looked for the farthest thing from my own reality, and came up with a mouse living in a (mostly) fictional woodpile.

Or at least I thought my character was far from my own reality. Instead, I found an very familiar introverted mouse living in my imagination. One who wishes for the things it seems like everyone else has, but who, in the end, is very happy with her own little life.

  1. I’m glad you shared your little mouse story here. I think when we give ourselves to a daily writing routine, we find little mice hiding inside who want to be heard.

  2. This is so cute. Thanks for reminding us that we can get creative with what “slice of life” means. This exercise got you out of your typical writing routine and helped you think more about yourself. Great reminder before the challenge starts on Friday!

  3. I love all the repetition in your mouse story. It reads as a sweet fable, and also as close to your truth. And I agree with Melanie’s comment above, that sometimes we find a way to write our truth by pretending we are trying out fiction 🙂

  4. This is a lovely poem, but combined with your prose, becomes so much more! Thanks for the reflection on the internal journeys of writing and the power of imagining. Also, I could see this making a warm and charming picture book!

  5. “Sometimes Creek” just makes me smile. I love the story of this…the longing of this. I agree that this has major book vibes. The illustrations would be so fun with hide & seek seeds.
