Poetry Friday: August

AUGUST

heat
bees
storms
leaves
flowers
seeds

August is a juicy piece of fruit with the seed of Fall at its center. In spite of all the lush growth of Summer, the brown of Autumn is at the heart of August. August marks the shift from the production of leaves, to the production of seeds. Life must go on, come Spring, and August see(d)s to that.

Birthday Girl Margaret has this week’s Poetry Friday Roundup at Reflections on the Teche. Happy Birthday (and recently, Happy 40th Anniversary), Margaret! Glad we get to celebrate with you!

  1. The mandalas are a most spectacular project, Mary Lee. Each one must cement the memory of the time & the ‘why’ of creating, your poetic stitches. The skinny, true. I’ve shared about fall this week, too, via Buffy’s new book. Yes, it’s starting!

  2. How beautiful! Your needlework is so fun to see. Those colors with kernels of brown…yes, life must go on. Enjoy today. I will be thinking of all those pretty greens and blues and yellows and reds.

  3. Thank you for this spectacular three in one post, Mary Lee – a mandala, a skinny, and a lyrical description. I just wrote this line in my notebook – “August is a juicy piece of fruit with the seed of Fall at its center.” can’t wait to see what it inspires.

  4. Wow! What a fabulous post, Mary Lee. I love how you weave together your thoughts and your embroidery and share the riches with us. Like Rose, I’m especially struck by this: “August is a juicy piece of fruit with the seed of Fall at its center.”

  5. Oooh, that mandala! I am in love with your stitches, Mary Lee! I’ve never been able to write adequately about August. ‘Round these parts, August often means hurricanes…which I am sure is a big contributor to my uneasy feelings about the month. xo

  6. Mary Lee, I was weeding in my purple coneflower patch this morning and thinking I should cut the faded blooms. Then I thought about your poem and decided to leave the heads for seeds and birds. So some fattened goldfinches have you to thank.

  7. A friend posted that August was her worst month, and I had to respond with the reminder of peaches, tomatoes and corn. It has been too hot and dry here, but we would miss all of the above and more if we had no August. I love your post, and especially that August see(d)s to the future.
